Can You Do a Safari in Cape Town?
Yes, as a day trip. Cape Town has no wildlife reserves with the Big 5, so most visitors think they need to fly to Kruger. They don't. Aquila Private Game Reserve is a malaria-free Big 5 reserve in the Karoo, about two hours from the city. Your chauffeur collects you from your hotel in a premium vehicle and heads north out of the city towards Aquila Private Game Reserve. It is roughly two hours through the Hex River Valley and into the Karoo, and the drive itself is part of the day, with the scenery shifting from coast to mountain to wide open semi-desert as you go. 16h00: Traditional Game Drive | Meet at Pick Up Point B
The main event. You board an open game vehicle with your ranger and head out across Aquila's 10,000 hectares as the afternoon light softens. Lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard all live here, alongside giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and a great deal of birdlife. The late timing is what makes this drive worth doing. The animals are active, the light is gold, and the photographs are better for it.
18:00: Time at Leisure
After the drive, the time is yours. Swim, take a sundowner on the terrace, or simply sit and watch the Karoo sky turn amber and pink while the day winds down. No one will move you along.
Scenic Return & Drop-off
Your chauffeur is waiting to bring you back to Cape Town under Karoo stars. A comfortable two-hour return, with enough time to compare sightings and work out which photograph made the cut. Door to door, you are back at your hotel by roughly 21h00.
